How to Sell Your Car in the UAE, Step by Step (2026 Guide)

Everything you need to sell your car in the UAE: preparing documents, setting a price, choosing how to sell, and transferring ownership safely.

Selling a car in the UAE is not complicated, but it follows specific steps, and skipping one costs you time or part of the price. This guide walks through the whole path, from the decision to receiving payment and transferring ownership.

Step 1: Prepare your documents first

Any serious buyer will first confirm the car is yours and can be sold. Prepare:

  • A valid Emirates ID.
  • The vehicle registration card (Mulkiya), valid or renewable.
  • A mortgage release letter from the bank if the car was bought on finance. Ownership of a mortgaged car cannot be transferred until the mortgage is released, so start this early because it can take days.
  • Service history, if available. Not mandatory, but it raises buyer confidence and often the price.

Step 2: Know your car's real value

What you paid years ago has nothing to do with today's price. What sets the value now: model, year and specs, mileage, the actual condition of body and engine, accident history, and demand for that model locally and for export. Look at listings for similar cars, and remember that listing prices are what sellers ask, not what buyers actually pay; the gap can be 10% or more.

Step 3: Choose how to sell

You have three main routes:

  1. Selling directly to an individual through classifieds. Theoretically the highest price, but it consumes weeks of calls, viewings and haggling, and you manage the transfer yourself.
  2. Selling to a showroom or dealer. Faster, but usually the lowest price since the dealer adds a margin, and you may need to visit several.
  3. Selling to a specialised car-buying company that comes to you, inspects the car, gives a final offer and handles the paperwork. This combines speed and convenience, with a price based on the real market after a physical inspection.

Choose according to what matters most: time, effort, or the last dirham.

Step 4: Prepare the car for inspection

You do not need costly repairs, but a clean interior and exterior make a clear impression. Remove personal belongings, have the spare key ready if you have one, and bring any recent service invoices.

Step 5: Inspection and offer

With specialised companies, an inspector checks the car against a list covering body, engine, transmission, suspension, electronics and cabin, and documents the condition with photos. Then you receive an offer. Always ask: is the offer final? Are there fees or commission deducted from it? How long is it valid?

Step 6: Completion and ownership transfer

On acceptance, payment is made by the agreed method (bank transfer, cheque or cash), followed by ownership transfer at the licensing centre in your emirate. Specialised companies handle the whole procedure; you only attend to sign. Never hand over the car or keys before receiving the full amount.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Selling before the mortgage is released.
  • Handing over the car against a promise to pay later.
  • Not registering the transfer officially, leaving legal responsibility for the car in your name.
  • Using a single inflated listing as your price reference.
