How to Release Your Car's Bank Mortgage Before Selling

Bought your car on finance and want to sell? Here are the steps to release the mortgage, the documents, the expected timeline, and what you can do in parallel.

Many cars in the UAE are bought on bank finance, which means the bank is registered as a mortgagee on the registration. The car's ownership cannot be transferred to any buyer, individual or company, until the bank removes that mortgage. The good news is that the process is straightforward if you start early.

First: know the outstanding amount

Contact your bank and request a liability letter or early settlement statement. It shows the remaining loan balance, any early settlement fees, and how long that figure remains valid.

Second: settle the balance

Settlement is made by the car's owner directly to the bank. At AL Faeq, we do not settle loans on behalf of customers; we buy the car once the mortgage release is complete. If you are relying on the sale proceeds to settle, the practical route is to arrange the settlement temporarily from another source, or to discuss the settlement options your bank offers.

Third: request the mortgage release letter

After full settlement, the bank issues a mortgage release letter (clearance letter) and sends an electronic notification to the licensing authority to remove the mortgage from the vehicle record. Some banks complete this in a day or two; others need a week.

Fourth: confirm the mortgage is removed

Before finalising with any buyer, confirm the mortgage has actually been removed from the vehicle record at the licensing authority, not just that the letter was issued. This prevents surprises on transfer day.

What you can do in parallel

  • Book the car inspection and receive your offer while the bank prepares the letter; inspection does not require the release.
  • Prepare your Emirates ID, registration card and service history.
  • Do not sign a final sale agreement or hand over the car before the release is complete.

Common questions

*Can the buyer settle the loan instead of me?* Some parties do this, but at AL Faeq we buy the car only after the mortgage is released, to keep the process clear and direct.

*Does a previous mortgage lower my car's value?* No. A past mortgage does not affect value; it simply has to be removed before transfer.
