What Determines Your Used Car's Price? 9 Factors to Know Before Selling

Year and mileage are not everything. Learn the nine factors that actually affect your used car's price in the UAE.

"How much is my car worth?" has no single-number answer; it is the result of nine factors working together. Understanding them helps you estimate realistically, and know what you can improve before selling and what you cannot.

1. Model and trim

A Land Cruiser GXR and a Land Cruiser VXR of the same year can differ by tens of thousands. Trim and packages (engine, leather, screen, suspension) are a core part of value.

2. Year

Each older year deducts a share of value, but the curve is not flat: the biggest drop is in the first three years, then it slows. Some models hold value exceptionally well, such as the Land Cruiser, Patrol and Hilux.

3. Mileage

The UAE average is around 20,000 km per year. A car below average is valued higher; far above average, lower. What matters most is that the mileage matches the actual condition.

4. Actual condition

Body and paint, engine and transmission, suspension, tyres, cabin. This is what an inspection reveals, and it is the difference between a listing price and a real buying price.

5. Accident history

Any past accident deducts from value even after repair, and the deduction depends on where the damage was: a scratched door is one thing, chassis damage is another entirely.

6. Service history

Regular documented servicing, especially at the dealer, reassures buyers and raises the price. Its absence does not necessarily mean the car is bad, but it increases perceived risk.

7. Specifications

GCC specs are valued higher than American or other specs in the local market, thanks to climate suitability, parts availability and warranty.

8. Local and export demand

Some models are strongly demanded for export (Japanese 4x4s, pickups, certain SUVs), and that demand raises the buying price regardless of the local market.

9. Timing and market conditions

Prices move with supply and demand, and a new model launch can lower the previous generation's price. You cannot control the market, but you can avoid the long wait that increases depreciation over time.

What you can improve before selling

Cleanliness, gathering service records, fixing small cheap faults (a bulb, a fuse). Major repairs rarely recover their cost.
